11 Months of Books, Beyond the Best
Tuesday, 27 May 2008

I haven’t been taking good notes of what I’ve read, and decided to make a master list from when I started tracking them in mid 2006. In 2006 I read about 9 books, in 2007 I read 24 books, and so far this year (2008) I’ve read 22 books. I did a review last year covering Aug 2006 to May 2007 (19 books), about 10 months. I have 36 books to tell you about from this 11 months.

This book I loved beyond anything I’ve read in awhile (******): Rules of Engagement (Serrano 5) by Elizabeth Moon.

Moon’s characters are deeply engaging. I fell in love with many of them. They don’t always do what I’d like, and some things in RoE break my heart. I love the closeness and incredible bonds between the characters. They will go to great -life changing- lengths for each other. It’s a rare thing in Real Life, but that kind of love and acceptance is a treasure people crave.

The darkness, the evil bit of trouble in RoE is similar to the first book of this series, but imo, better. I love that darkness. Something about it, about what people are really capable of, pulls at me. People can be horrible to each other, and Moon’s characters have to endure, survive, thrive and fight this darkness.

A Call to Arms II
Tuesday, 27 May 2008

The second Depths of Peril Hard Core Challenge begins June 1. Use the hard core mode if you can, follow hard core rules if you can’t (no item sharing between characters). If you want to go Super Hard Core and not recruit anyone, I’ll place *** by your name in the winners circle. Smile After the master list, I’ll also list winners by character type (we have to be fair to those weakling mages, after all Wink ). Post your characters, dead or alive by June 14th, Texas time. On June 15th, the winners will be posted.

Clear your decks. Get ready. Two weeks of ruthless fun is about to begin! See you in the winners’ circle!

Don't Quit Your Day Job Podcast
Wednesday, 07 May 2008

Ever wonder what it’s like at my Future Classics writers group? Well, when we're not critiquing stories, this is what it’s like: http://www.dqydjpodcast.blogspot.com/

Melanie and Jerry are both very talented writers in my writing group. Melanie has already requested for the rest of the group to download sype (or something like that… At first I thought she said Skylab, and I was having a weird Terminator moment), get headsets with a mic, and be a guest on this podcast show.

Maybe one day soon, my voice will make an appearance. I’ll let you know.

Discovery!
Wednesday, 07 May 2008

I’ve been checking a short story contest I entered six to twelve times a day, but alas, they’ve yet to post the winners. I thought since the reading period was over, they would have done it already! Wrong. I'll let you know when I find out. The story I submitted is a modern day zombie story. Smile Fun stuff!

Luckily I’ve discovered a weird, cool tv show. I had the tube on, just as background noise while I planned to read (I don't always do this, btw), and instead, I got sucked into the story. It was originally on Showtime, but now the first season is playing on CBS.

I borrowed the first season from a friend and forced Steven to watch it with me. During the first episode of Dexter, Steven asked me, "Is he a bad guy or a good guy?" My answer, "Yes." Love it, love it, love it. Unlike Firefly, at least I stumbled onto this one before it gets canceled (and I really hope it doesn’t!).

Birthday's So Over, Battlestar Love
Wednesday, 07 May 2008

Moving on to April (yay! Only one month behind now)...

I haven’t had a party in ages, so this year I decided to have one all weekend, Firefly watching by day (love, love, love that tv show) and dancing by night. So… My birthday’s over, and I’m left with a mix of emotions, and they don’t make much sense. I’m loved and accepted; I’m ignored and rejected. I had fun overall. The stream of guests was choppy, and in some of the inbetween times, I ended up (and enjoyed) watching Battlestar Galactica, season 3 (yes, as always, I’m behind on these things).

What’s wrong with me, you ask? Loved/ignored, accepted/rejected. Scitzo? Or is everyone like this? Or do I have too much time on my hands and worry about stupid crap? All of the above? Ha! I don’t know where all of this pondering is going. I spent some time staring at my picture thinking, "It all makes sense, if I’m a cylon."
