And What More?
Friday, 27 April 2007

Writing Inheritance was all centered around the question, "And?" Instead of peeling an onion, it was more like filling a water balloon or adding rubber bands to a rubber band ball collection. "And" was a question of more. What more? I added layers until I thought the story was really working and interesting. The result? Ahh, I guess you'll just have to check it out, for that answer. ;-)

All of this talk about Inheritance has me really missing Bluefoot and the girl. Anyone wonder what happens to them next? I have some ideas. If you really liked any of the stories, let me know so I can write more like them. Ditto on the characters.

Dragon Stone is my lifestone story. It's about the price of resurrection and the hopelessness of the Fourth Great War.  It's the first story I wrote in a barbarian city. I enjoyed writing about the barbarian culture. They will never give up. Their resistance gave the west the time it needed to let the evil army and its leaders, Draaien and Ciglio, become complacent and eventually turn on each other. That kind of determination, the refusal to take no for an answer, saved the west from annihilation.

In the Eye

I wanted to model a story after my favorite book of all time, Beowulf's Children by Niven, Pournelle and Barnes. It a funny story how I ever came to read this particular book. I was looking among my husbands many books, many that he received from a Taco Bueno customer when my husband used to work there many moons ago. One caught my eye. Why? Because it had a picture of a baby and a machine gun on the cover. That's right. I randomly picked a book by its cover, and it turned out to be my favorite book of all time! I've read lots of Niven, some Pournelle and Barnes, and have never found another book like it.

Here are some of the things I love about Beowulf's Children.

ConDFW VI

What can I say about ConDFW? It was at the end of February. I went to some panels, went to some room parties, and spent time with friends in general. It was a fun time. I didn’t win the ribbon for craziest experience like I did at FenCon. Someone upstaged me, and really, being married I was out of their league. Innocent

I made some new discoveries at Con DFW. Panels are like gambling. They may or may not be informative. They may or may not be entertaining. And they may or may not stay on topic! Haha! I don’t remember how many panels I went to, but four of them stand out in my mind.
