Plants: How do They do It? Print

I’ve been eating green onions lately. I use the stalk like chives, cutting up the green stalks for food and I’m left about an inch of yellow-green stalk above the white bulb and roots. Compost right? But wait! I thought, why not soak the roots and plant the sucker? Maybe it’ll grow, maybe not.

Right before Thanksgiving, I put two stumpy green onion bulbs into a plastic cup (front cup in the picture) with enough water to cover half the bulb. The top of the stalks didn’t rise out of the cup.

 Magic Green Onions

A few weeks later, after having forgot about it, I have what you see in the picture. My thought? Miracle. Seriously, how did it do that? In the ground sure, the ground has stuff to transform, but water? Just water? Wow.

They'd grown about five inches. I put more of the plants in the second cup, and after four weeks, they've completely regrown.
