Attack and defense go hand in hand.  The higher someone's attack value, the more likely their physical attack will hit.  The higher someone's defense value, the less likely an enemy's physical attack will hit them.

Chance to hit = 1.0 - ( VictimDefense / ( 3.0 * AttackerAttack ) )

From this we can see:

  • An attack has a 50/50 chance of hitting when the attack value is 2/3 of the defense
  • If the victim's defense is 3 times higher than the attacker's attack value, they can't be hit at all
  • An attacker can never get to 100% chance to hit
