That's to say, a slot for a heavy engine and a medium thrusters will give you all the thrust you need for the rest of the game. (Helm increases with crew.)
You might need more power plants...

You shouldn't be "investing" in stats at all; spend maybe 5-15 points on the holy trinity (Tactical/Helm/Engineering), grind for Very Rare Tactical/Helm/Engineering...

Kinetic weapons lack identity
I haven't yet found a real reason to use kinetic-type weapons (rams, railguns) over beams. Beams are fast and missiles are far-range (and sometimes oneshot things). Kinetic weapons have the same...
