I wasn't me, but the player model is new and, I believe, built in a way that results in much better normal maps than the old model had.
The only thing that I have done when it comes to the player model (that is visible in the screenshots) is implement shadow mapping. This allows shadows to cast on everything and even to self cast. So in general the lighting/shadowing should look a lot better.
