Default Um....what?

Just gave the Depths of Peril demo a try. The game has so many unique twists you can barely call it a diablo style game anymore. That's great! Finally.... a developer who wants to use their brain when making games.

I tried hard to like this game. I really did.

But, this diplomacy thing. It's just so impossible. I try to suggest a non-aggression pack or some small thing. It's the greatest insult anyone has ever heard. What do I need to do to make it possible? Give them my life's savings along with my first born child along with several quarts of blood, sacrifice my wife and give them my daughters? Um, no. Why the incredibly high demands? It's ridiculous.

Plus, while I'm playing, my diplomacy rating with everyone seems to fall so quickly that I'm wondering how you make work at all.

Obviously I'm a newb to this game and have nary a clue. This diplomacy thing is starting to tick me off.

tl/dr:
Just played the demo. Diplomacy looks impossible to me. AI convent demands to "make this work" are just way too high. How do I make diplomacy work?

What you are seeing is the covenants will only sign treaties with you once they like you enough. If they don't like you very much, you might be able to pay them a lot and still sign the treaty. However, if they already like you enough they won't ask for anything in return.

A question still remains. How does one get good relations with another convent? I hope this gift giving isn't the only way. I dislike games that are like that. I always get this "why am I the one who has to make all the effort here" kind of feeling.

I only played up to character level 4. Maybe I expected too much too soon. But, I could've sworn that diplomatic relations were constantly deteriorating unless I kept it up with the gift giving. Did I misread it? If I'm wrong I'll freely admit it.

The main thing I'm asking is if there's any other way to improve relations, other than just endlessly lavishing gifts upon someone?

Giving gifts, trading items, setting up trade routes with them, and killing their enemies all should improve relations with other covenants.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. If you really need to improve relations there is a way that is almost free. Make a trade of money of 100 and offer 100. It should work as a trade and if that doesn't work, offer 100 and trade 101. Ive done it a few times.

I tried it as an emergency tactic but it doesn't work. Sounds like an exploit so it may've been patched.

I found and watched a video of someone playing DoP for a while. Gave the demo another try and accomplished far more than I did before. Ok, so I'm becoming interested.

Before I spend any money, though, I'd still like to know what to expect beyond level 6. I'd especially like to know how diplomacy stuff changes when you start getting higher level, have more cash and better items, etc.

How do you veteran players usually deal with the other covenants? In other words, how is dealing with the other covenants fun for you? Trade routes, rumors, etc, etc.....

Wish GameFAQs had a FAQ or walkthrough on this game.
