Default "special" room

I keep getting messages from the npc's that dungeon level 'x' has a 'special' room in it. I got that in the latest town for 2 different levels. I've searched every stinking wall looking for illusionary walls or secret doors on those levels. Are they lying? Is it possible the only way in is by teleport from another level? I've found a number of 'unknown' gates/portals on various levels. The dungeons go down to level 13 with a 5th level character so am leery of trying them with a weak character. I was surprised to start a new character and have 13 levels with the first town. (and almost 2/3rds of the quests were for levels 10-13!)

How do you find 'special' rooms?

I'm almost certain that there have to be an illusionary wall somewhere. There are no other ways to secret (special) rooms that I know of. Sound pretty frustrating.

Some special rooms just use doors.

Hummm, now that I have finally saved the dang town. .(Took over 20 quests to do the first town! ).. I can go down and try searching some more now. I didn't want to search too hard cause the town kept getting attacked or I had timed quests. I still have the sneaky suspicion there are gates or something to get in there and one way doors out. Shrugs. I'll let you know if I ever find them, or I give up.

edit: Gave up. Starting next town now. Will keep eyes out for more of those room a lot better this time.

So are special rooms the ones where it goes "Ding! You've discovered a Vault!" or a graveyard or an armory? And will the NPCs stop talking about it once you've found it?

Roswitha - Yes, the rooms make a noise when you find them. I don't know 100%, but I'm betting it won't shut up the townspeople. You know how gossip is! ;-)

Although now that I think of it, it would be nice if they said, "You found a special room. You're amazing!"

Yes, vaults and other rooms like that are special rooms. The npcs might still talk about them after you have found them (I forget off hand).

Oh! Okay then. I'll pretty much ignore the npcs from now on if it looks like I've found all the rooms on a level.

Just wanted to say that one time I was in town and talked to an NPC and they said something like, "I hear that so-and-so the weapon smith is selling something-something"(and the name of the weapon was purple to indicate that it was an artifact). I went straight to that person, but they didn't even have anything better than some yellow items. I then went and checked every NPC in town and none of them had any artifacts.

So, I think sometimes they still say things that aren't true anymore.
