A little bit embarrassing to be stuck on something so basic. Better to own up to not rebooting (after installing gfx drivers...) than waste someone's time trying to figure out the problem.

another gig of ram should set you back very little, like maybe 35 bucks on newegg (just make sure you match your ram to what you have, brand and model number). It would be well worth it for all your computing, because running win7 on 1gig of ram just sounds like PAIN to me.

P.S. I hope you have all the fancy doodads turned off in win 7, and are well versed in disabling unnecessary services.
