Subraces?
I see all these posts with people talking about playing subraces, yet I don't seem to be able to do so...
Is this some 'secret' unlock or something? Or are they all having to use hacks/mods to be able to do so?

They are an unlock - you have to meet a subrace before you can fly a ship built by it.
The easiest way to unlock some is to play the second challenge sector, I think it's called "End of the World". It's full of subraces. Other subraces are harder to unlock, though... I think I have a post somewhere that discusses them. Here's a link to the post.
