Default Too many cave-ins

I'm currently playing a Wizard using Fire Maelstrom, Ice Storm and Fireball: almost every time I cast one of these spells several cave-ins drop down.

When I say "several" I mean this:

These cave-ins killed me many times (and monsters sometimes ).

Is it supposed to balance the power of AOE spells?
Could this be toned down a bit?

To my knowledge, it's already been toned down in one of the previous patches.
Chances are there's a world modifier in effect, increasing the amount of cave-ins... check your map screen for a list of currently active world modifiers.

And yes, it's there to balance out screen-clearing AOE spells. It also happens if you hit a gas leak or destroy support beams. Be careful where you shoot that fireball!

I can't even get this many spamming earthquake with -50 cast speed. You must have been lucky or hit support beams.

Thanks for the answers!

Since I have to live with all those cave-ins I'm going to use the mod that halves cave-in damage (so I can play without dying too much :P)

By the way with that many cave-ins the game started to slow down a bit

Yeah it does something wicked to the framerate when you have that many rocks on the screen hahah.. pretty sure those rocks got a lot higher polygon counts than any of the monsters in the game.

If you can get far enough away that your char doesn't get buried along with the monsters, the cave-ins can be a better AoE than your spells.

It's already been toned down so many times and, to be honest, magic is overpowered like hell in this game. The only thing that WILL kill you with magic + movement is the cave ins.

So no, no changes - or at least I hope not.

But that is an impressive amount of cave ins. There should be an award there...

Certain areas are more prone to cave-ins than others when you use powerful spells. If you see gas leaks, water drips, cracked ground, support beams, etc. it is often and indicator that the surrounding area is likely to collapse. Sometimes when I play with my archer I will shoot down support beams from a distance if I see a group of mobs nearby.
