Default Bosun Tuidjy's most excellent advice.

I'll use this post to accumulate list some tricks I wish I had figured out earlier. I only have a few today, mostly concerned with mobility, but I will keep adding.

Extra thrust improves maneuverability. It is easy enough to reach the 200 limit on your ship speed, but that is no reason to stop improving your thrust if you can. The extra thrust reduces your turning radius, which can be very useful when you want to avoid mines, keep on top of a target you are lasering to oblivion, or fake out a kamikaze.

Immobility is dangerous, avoid it! Many dangers can be avoided through superior speed. Many missiles cannot catch up to a ship doing 200, let alone 300. Schisms, quakes and patchworks have weapons which are devastating if you do not get away quickly, and that's much harder if you have to accelerate first. So, avoid stopping or entering gravity wells.

You can scan and search while moving. You do not want to be a sitting duck on top of an object that you are exploring, nor do you want to be in the range of possible traps. So instead of flying to your target and stopping, keep orbiting at a safe distance.

Some weapons don't interrupt your task. While you are orbiting a target that you are scanning, mining, searching or exploring you can fire some weapons without interrupting the task. An example is the EM shockwave.

Ya forgot to mention that to scan/mine/search/etc. & fire a weapon at the same time, ya assign that desired weapon to a Right Click Slot & Right Click use the Weapon.

What you list is indeed the best way to do it, but you may you already have an aimed weapon bound to your right mouse button. I did not want to make people think they have less choice than they do. You can use the right, middle, and even side mouse button or any number key (including [1]) while scanning.
