Melvin's mother was a powerful mage. His father was a mighty warrior who fell from grace, and to support his family, needed to acquire the darker skills of a reaver to survive and provide for them. Melvin grew up to be tough (with a name like Melvin how could you not), but was also blessed with his mother's affinity for the magical arts as well. Rather than choose which of his parents to follow, he decided why not follow both? His parents always encouraged Melvin to use his skills to do good wherever and whenever he could. Melvin's two best childhood friends, Scariadne the conjuror and Perren the death knight, had similar goals and ideals, so the three of them named themselves Titans and traveled together to Trukey to fight evil. Melvin thought about calling his adventure "Titan Quest", but for legal reasons, decided not to.

Adventures begin quickly for Melvin as he entered the Ancient Jungle - he encounters the Sisterhood of Light, who greets him warmly. He acquires a few health potions from a traveling shoe vendor. He rescues Eduane, a rogue, who joins the Titans. He locates Ell who needs to be escorted to the Vehement Chambers.

While traveling with Ell and his friends through the Vehement Chambers, Melvin negotiates with SoL for contact with the Scourge. After noting that the Scourge was much more powerful than the Titans, Melvin quickly recruits Maura, a death knight, to his cause. These moves level the playing field a bit, but has left Melvin with only 3CP to his name. Ell became separated from the group, and did not make it on his own. Melvin then recruited Maura the rogue, which now put him at the top of the power rankings, but at the cost of being low on food. This lead did not last long, as Melvin got wind of the Inferno clan, which turned out to be much more powerful than the Titans. Melvin also purchased contact from SoL with the Mystic Brotherhood and Eviscerators, again draining his Treasury. He never met the Horde, but found out that monsters had destroyed them. Melvin was now in contact with six other active clans, and was not happy to find out that his clan was now in fourth place. He had yet to meet the Reptilian Terror, but needed more funds to buy contact with them.

Well, now Melvin does not need to meet the Reptilian Terror because the Mystic Brotherhood just knocked them off. Power rankings at this point are: Inferno 21, Eviscerators 15, Titans 13, Mystic Brotherhood 11, Scourge 9, Fang 8.5, Sisterhood of Light 2.

One area where Melvin has done particularly well is with health potions. He already (at level 6) has 55 level 1 health potions and 10 level 2 health potions. Little did he know how useful those potions would become later.

Melvin rescues Janos, a priest, who joined the Titans, but the clan is still in pretty desperate need of someone with food gathering skills.

Melvin now begins questing in earnest. But right after portaling over to the Ancient Jungle, he runs into Mortus Avatar, but his team dispatches him fairly quickly.

Massive clan wars suddenly break out. Eviscerators and Mystic Brotherhood are under attack. Inferno asks Titans to declare war on the Eviscerators. Melvin is in no position to argue with the top clan, so he complies, but turns back around and makes a peace treaty with Eviscerators. Then things suddenly go crazy. Eviscerators declare war on Titans, which would be manageable except for the fact that alliances kick in, and now almost everyone is at war with Titans. Melvin decides to take the offensive and raid Eviscerators. While at the Eviscerator camp, SoL joins in the fight against Titans. Melvin quickly conquers SoL, and while Eviscerators put up a much better fight, they too eventually succumb, gaining Titans a total of 60 badly needed food. No sooner was Eviscerators eliminated when Inferno invades Trukey, joined by their allies Fang and Scourge. Janos cannot handle the pressure, and rather than risk him becoming dangerous, the town evicts him, leaving Melvin with only the five people in his raid party. The odds are stacked against Melvin, but he feels he has a good crew and has a lot of health potions.

Melvin catches a break - Inferno turns on the Scourge and eliminates them. Melvin glances into his fort only to discover Fang hacking away on his healthstone. After a difficult fight with Fang, Titans emerge triumphant, and gain another 34 food. Now it's time to go mano a mano with Inferno. Melvin endures a blistering fire attack from a horde of elite goblin flame throwers. Melvin wished he had more fire resistance, but he can't dwell on that now. He still has over 20 health potions, and the tide seems to be turning in his favor. Melvin pulls back one time to get his crew healed up at the healthstone and repair equipment, and prepares for the final assault. Another wave of flame throwers teleports in - Melvin and his party are showing signs of fatigue, and the health potions are running low. The final push pays off - and the last goblin flamethrower is eliminated. Exhausted and elated, Melvin and his heroes eagerly divide up the loot from Din's chest, which includes a Ciglio gold ring. Melvin feels he has done his parents proud.

Endnote - Melvin finished at level 7, in total game time of only 82 minutes (and I don't play fast). That last fight was really a lot of fun.

Yeah -- I'm holding the top rank, by probably double everyone else -- but I've been holding the clan wars off -- barely. I have a lot of money -- I drained a couple merchants of their funds and had some gear money bonuses. So I've been carefully bribing myself out of wars with the other clans, and trying to quest for them to maintain peace. If any clear losers in the alliances rear their heads I may have to go after them. SoL is at the bottom of the rankings, so quite likely to be gone soon. My alliance with them keeps dragging me wholesale into wars.

[Edit:] And I have a LOT of clan members. I kept bumping into people with foraging, cooking, brewing, etc. I have 2 quartermasters. I will have to take them on the road soon or the infighting might kill us.

Oops -- well I made it to level 9 but I was on the 6th level of a dungeon and trapped between someone gone rogue and a special and died. That's the way the hardcore cookie crumbles.

When someone in town has "sold secrets" and you cash in the quest, shouldn't you find out who was doing the naughty things?

Congratulations! And bonus points for excellent storytelling.

Red face Bubicus' Melvin run

First, I read the patch notes for 0.915 so I would be more familiar with the changes to the clans.

Early on, I discovered the Sisterhood of Light. I quickly finished enough quests to get an mutual protection pact with them in the first 5 minutes. I also discovered the Reptilian Terror and did the same by the 21-minute mark. I allied with both of them, and they formed an alliance by the 29-minute mark. I figured this would give me a good margin of safety for the rest of the game.

I quickly noticed the Sisterhood of Light's new clan preferences made them negotiate treaties. They negotiated non-aggression pacts with everybody else really quickly. They also made alliances with the Mystic Brotherhood, Inferno, and Fang. Because of the SoL, everybody quickly became friends -- except for the Scourge and the Eviscerators, who warred against each other very early. Nobody wanted to befriend either of them... probably because whoever did would quickly get dragged into the war, bringing all of their allies along. It was a pretty interesting diplomatic situation.

I also allied with the Mystic Brotherhood, as did the Reptilian Terror, giving me a solid block of over half of the clans. Later on, Inferno and Fang allied with SoL, MB, and RT, and I started working on Fang's quests so I could solidify my part of the alliance without spending much cash.

I needed the cash because I wanted to modify my skills. I had not yet played a Reaver class, so I wanted to see how effective Rampage was. I was disappointed with it, so I started saving money so I could take Breach instead: my earlier experiments with armor piercing and deep wounds on a Weaponmaster/Weaponmaster hybrid went very well, so I figured Breach would be better than Rampage.

Unfortunately, my thriftiness quickly proved useless. While working on Fang's quests in a dungeon, I accidentally destroyed a support beam and crushed my entire party. Game over!

As for my clan members, I also had a big clan. I had 14 members, which was more than any three other clans combined. There were at least 4 or 5 other NPCs I could have recruited as well, but I chose not to because I didn't like their skill sets. I didn't have serious food problems because a bunch of NPCs had quartermaster, hunting, brewing, etc. and I looted a few items with Food Sense enchantments.

My weapon of choice was Stormbringer, a Legendary staff I found after killing a quest boss: 9.8 DPS, 5 defense, +5.4% spell damage, +1.7 mana steal, +2 vitality, +1 intelligence, +2 min and +2 max damage, +5 poison resistance, +4% find items chance, +1-3 lightning damage. I was going to improve the Two-Handed Mastery skill to make it better, but again, I needed cash to free up the Rampage skill, so I never got around to it.

I have attached the game log to this post.

Default addendum...

I let the game play on after I died, because I was curious...

I discovered that I could still negotiate after dying, so I used all of my remaining cash to ally with Fang and get a mutual protection pact with Inferno. I started waiting for my clan members to make items so I could sell them and buy an alliance with Inferno.

Within two minutes after my death, SoL declared war on the Eviscerators and raided them. That meant EVERYBODY was instantly at war with them, including my clan. Unfortunately, I was dead, so I couldn't lead any raiding parties.

It looks like I would've had a diplomatic victory if I had only survived another 5-10 minutes! All I would've had to do is ally with Inferno, kill or ally with the Scourge (2 members), and kill the Eviscerators (7 members, but I outnumbered them 2-to-1 and all of the other clans were fighting them, too).

It's kind of fun that one can still play the diplomatic game in hardcore after dying.

Thanks. It's nice to hear. Stretching the imagination a little is good exercise for these old brain cells.
