cannot pick up most items in multiplayer

My partner and I have just started playing Din's Curse together. She loads up her world and invites me. My character can't pick up most items that are dropped, either by her character, monsters, or containers. Usually I can see the actual item, but not the descriptive text. And I certainly can't pick them up. Obviously, this gets unmanageable after a point.

We're both running on Macs, latest patches, Demon War mod. We tried the beta (on my machine only so far), with no luck.

Any ideas?
