Conjurer question

1.) Are pets viable? At low levels, I tried it out and they seemed to die so fast and it wasn't even on a hard difficulty.

2.) Anyway to increase spell damage or is it all static/flat damage? My damage over time AoE started out great but at level 23, it kills a lot slower.

+Any tips/tricks welcome!
