I assume you by not taking credit you are not taking the blame in the eyes of those affected by said quest as well?

Yes, but it hurts so much. I really want that xp and money, but if I take it from everybody, I'm guaranteeing everybody will hate me and I'll lose the game.

Believe me, I did it once. It's that irresistible, but I learned my lesson.

Yeah, basically races will get upset if you do quests for their enemies. It's up to you of you want to claim credit for all of the quests you do, but sometimes it's not really in your best interests.

What if you just do those quests without taking credit for them? Shouldn't that upset the enemy races as well?

I suspect that the enemy races will be upset, but not at you personally since they don't know who did it.

I think there should be some consequences to just doing quests for the enemy rather than just for taking credit for them. Otherwise you could help whoever you want so long as you don't take credit for it. I'd think that your enemies will be able to identify you, and rumors will circulate about your actions. Handing in the quests should be an extra penalty -- here you are openly taking credit for helping their enemies. But it shouldn't be the only point where you earn their disapproval.

Sometimes you can't help it. Your out minding your own business, and bam! Those space monsters you've been taking out while exploring a new system? That was exactly who race X needed killed. Quest solved. If you just click the button. *Don't do it!*

OK. So I'd say the quests where you really can't help it, such as monsters, should not count against you when you kill them unless you claim credit for it. But for clearer cases where you actively have to go and do something, and where there would be witnesses who could tell on you, you should lose reputation with the enemy faction just for doing the action.

A more advanced system would simulate rumors circulating about the deed. If race X hates race Y and by killing monsters you accomplish race Y's quest, thus making race X upset, then X's reaction should depend on who witnessed the destruction. Any members of X would convey the information back to their home planet, so you'd have to kill the ship to prevent it from getting back with the info.
