It's interesting how often the solution to something seems so far from the problem. In today's example, to fix the Chaos scenario not being very dangerous, I greatly improved monster pathfinding. It makes the monsters much more likely to come over and kill the player.

Yeah, a dev must be at least a tin gamer, so he does not make his game against the user. That will be a problem very soon when the AIs (hence pathfindings) will be good: a good AI is never distracted or tired, it integeres several human minds (kind of strategies), so the user will find this is a sadistic product.
A game AI has programmed flaws so it seems a natural thing.

For some reason getting very little sleep 2 nights in a row makes programming much more difficult.

I've been playing a lot of Stellaris lately. It's quite fun, but since it has changed so much over the years it is quite difficult to search for up to date information on it.

I thought about trying out Stellaris. Are you using any of the expansions or just the base game? Do you recommend any expansions?

From what I gather, the game is still being 'cooked', so to speak. I think Paradox does really well on their real world-based grand strategy games, which have many entities that are stronger than you. This makes up for the AI's deficiencies, making you feel like a cog in a working machine - one that can push back on your aggression - rather than just viewing some smoke-and-mirrors.

Stellaris goes for the more traditional 4x design, which means it starts out with expansion (which is widely regarded as the best part of the game), and afterwards it settles into a game where you obliterate the AI. They have to artificially create challenges for you in the late game such as 'awakening empires', or you'd have nothing to do.

Interesting analysis. I do like the history games. I'll have to check this out and see how well they paper over the differences between space and history.
