Looks like there will be some joystick support in the next build of Drox Operative (Windows only for now).

Does that mean the game could be played only with a joystick or -pad of one's choice, or is the keyboard still needed (apart from entering names for new ships, of course) ?

Other than typing in text, I believe you can play everything with a joystick if it has 2 sticks and a reasonable number of buttons. A one stick joystick can also, but it's not quite as nice.

Assuming I don't find something I horribly broke, yes it should be in the next beta patch.

We're pretty close to starting the Invasion of the Ancients beta/pre-order. There seems to be some kind of holiday this week though.
