can't locate a boss monster

I have a mission to kill a boss on level 2. I have mapped the entire level several times, but it never appears. I have tapped on all the walls, looking for illusions to dispel, all to no avail. I'd hate to abandon the town, but I cannot complete it without killing this bad guy.

I saved and exited out of the game, and when I restarted, the boss was there.
