Anyone have some item farming advice?

I've been reading through the forums to relearn this game and now I have a list of magic items I want to find for my new paladin/weapon master and future characters! How should I go about this? Are there any tricks or game mechanics I should know about or is it as simple as play towns around the same level as my desired item and kill stuff over and over?
