Default Catalyst 11.12 Flickering

The latest AMD Catalyst Drivers (11.12, released Dec. 13) make the foliage and ground flicker in DoP when any kind of Anti-aliasing is turned on. This flickering did not occur before the release of these drivers. The problem can be remedied by turning AA off completely, at least on my machine.

I ran the same test with Din's Curse and AA works fine with the newest Catalyst drivers, so the problem is exclusive to DoP.

If it matters I just tested the Steam version of DoP and the same thing happens (this is probably not surprising). Turning off AA remedies the problem substantially, although there may still be a few lingering flickers in the foliage.

There are a lot of people running these standard Catalyst drivers, so if the problem isn't my PC (which I don't think it is) then AA could be a problem for DoP going forward.

Just tested with the Kivi Demo and things work fine.

Another interesting note. If you open the relations screen while running with a character (i.e., while you are in motion and before you have come to a complete stop) then the entire game screen behind the open relations window begins to shake and blur profusely.

All you have to do is leave the relations screen (which is clear and readable) and the game screen stops shaking and blurring.

This happens with catalyst 12.1, which also didn't fix the AA issues featured in the 11.1 release.

The flickering was introduced with the patch that enabled wide screen resolutions, and affects only these resolutions (on ordinary aspect ratios, the relationship window occupies the entire screen, so there is no background to flicker). I suspect the background is not redrawn, causing the stale data from last ordinary rendering operation that used that video buffer to be displayed again.

Workaround: Make sure your character is not moving when you open the relations screen.

meriton is correct about the flickering being a widescreen bug. I'll fix it the next time we do a DoP patch. I would guess the general AA flicker is an ATI bug, but I'll look at it.
