Vassals, tributaries and protectorates question

If you make an empire your vassal/tributary/protectorate, and that empire is in a federation you're at war with, what will happen?

Will the empire leave the federation or remain hostile to you?

I had a primitive empire offer to be my vassal after I killed some of its friends from the same federation that had that system colonized. I guess the primitives were pooping their alien pants.

Hey, I just tested it with another empire. The empire became my vassal, and that made me peaceful with the entire federation I was at war with. However, the vassalized empire was still in the federation, and because many members of that federation happened to hate my genocidal guts, they declared war on me.

My vassal cancelled the vassal treaty and went to war with me too.
