played some multiplayer Drox Operative over the weekend, it was quite a bit of fun

5th alpha build of Drox Operative went out today: players can now buy/sell race contacts and buy jump gate activations

I take it jumpgates are the Drox equivalent of town teleporters...

I take it jumpgates are the Drox equivalent of town teleporters...
Jump gates are similar to the gates in DC and DoP. You have to activate them to be able to use them and they allow you to teleport around. However, in Drox you have restrictions on which jump gates you can teleport to (it has to be in a race settled system), using jump gates costs money based on the controlling races, and you can rebind to any jump gate (this is where you will resurrect to and jumping to your home system is free).

I avoid the jumpgates and stick to starlanes... Unless I'm desperate, which never happens of course (shhh). I really am a stellar player who never has trouble with mobs (umm...) and who never flies so far out of the system that I can't see the system on the map just to live through a nasty mob (let's pretend together!).

Is it still a mob in a space game?

today is one of those days were I changed a lot, but everything looks exactly like it did yesterday (much better UI & mechanics though)

added in sector modifiers today to Drox Operative (similar to Din's Curse world modifiers), so far 36 of them

Does that mean the player could potentially fly the distance between two systems by means of their sub-light engines alone, without the help of gates or lanes (even if it takes ages, like it should) ?

No. In game there isn't any connection between them except for starlanes, wormholes, and jump gates.
